La regione di Maramureş si trova nell`estremo nord del paese, ai confini con l`Ucraina (si, la tentazione di attraversare anche questo confine e` stata forte…). La vita qui sembra essersi fermata al 1800: i contadini vanno al lavoro sui carri trainati da cavalli, la falciatura delle messi e` fatta a mano e i buoi trainano l`aratro. Anche gli zingari, tantissimi, coi vestiti coloratissimi le donne e con i baffoni e il cappellone scuro gli uomini, si spostano su grandi carri stracarichi.
Il primo posto che ho visitato e` Săpânţa, in cui si trova il Cimitirul Vesel, cioe` “Cimitero Gioioso”, unico al mondo, in cui le tombe sono dipinte con scene di vita raffiguranti momenti della vita del defunto e inscritte con una poesia umoristica sul suo conto.
Ma la zona e` famosa anche per le sue chiese in legno, appartenenti alla Chiesa Ortodossa Rumena, la prima delle quali risale al XVI secolo. Molte di esse sono patrimonio dell`UNESCO: strette e con campanili altissimi, non v`e` traccia di altro materiale che il legno, nemmeno un chiodo; la maestria dei carpentieri dell`epoca e` davvero stupefacente.
Edit: a Barsana c`e` un meraviglioso complesso monasterico, questa e` solo una foto per dare un`idea.
Dove ho alloggiato? In una casa privata, dove il cibo per la cena, a base di zuppa di fagioli, salsiccia, formaggio e pane, e per la colazione, a base di crepes, marmellata di prugne e latte, era tutto fatto in casa.
The region of Maramureş is located in the extreme north of the country, bordering Ukraine (yes, the temptation to cross also this border was strong …). Life here seems to have stopped at 1800: the peasants go to work on horse-drawn carriages, hay is made of handmade and the oxens pull the plow. Gypsies, many, with colorful clothes on the women and with mustaches and dark hats on the men, move on large carts overloaded.
The first place I visited is Săpânţa, located in the Cimitirul Vesel, that is “Merry Cemetery”, unique in all the word, where the tombs are painted with scenes depicting moments in the life of the deceased and are inscribed with a humorous poem about him.
But the area is also famous for its wooden churches, belonging to the Romanian Orthodox Church, the first of which dates to the sixteenth century. Many of them are UNESCO World Heritages: narrow and tall towers, there is not a trace of other materials that wood, not even a nail, the craftsmanship of the carpenters is quite amazing.

Where I stayed? In a private house, where food for dinner, based on bean soup, sausage, cheese and bread and breakfast, based on pancakes, plum jam and milk, was all homemade.
