Antioco di Commagene

King Antiochus of Commagene was a guy not very modest. And his mausoleum on Nemrut Dağı confirm that.

On top of one of the highest mountains of Turkey he made carve huge statues of himself, lions, Greek and Persian gods, including Apollo-Mithras. The heads were detached from their bodies, probably during the iconoclasm period.

Today we call him a megalomaniac:

At sunset the site is really breathtaking:

This site is one of the most beautiful and special in Turkey, as you can see.

For lovers of maps: from Diyarbakır to Kahta, across the artificial dam, then I was forced to join a mini-tour.
