Castelli del deserto: li chiamano così, anche se in effetti ben pochi lo sono stati.
Si tratta per lo più di padiglioni da caccia, antichi villaggi, fortini e caravanserragli, palazzi in cui le carovane facevano sosta durante i loro lunghi viaggi mercantili.
La maggiorparte di essi sono oggi solo un mucchio di macerie.

Per visitarne qualcuno noleggio un auto ad Amman: esiste un’intera zona di autonoleggi, che, ovviamente, è piuttosto lontana dal centro della città. E Amman non è affatto piccola. Sceso dal taxi inizio a fare il giro di tutti gli uffici, situati uno di fianco all’altro (questa si che è una cosa comoda) chiedendo il prezzo per “la macchina più economica”. Alla fine scelgo un’agenzia locale e prendo una Hyundai, per 3 giorni a… non ricordo quanto. :)
La mia prima tappa è Umm el-Jimal.

Fu un villaggio fondato dai nabatei, nel primo secolo dopo Cristo, secondo delle iscrizioni in greco e nabateano trovate sul posto.

La sensazione che provo camminando tra migliaia di blocchi di basalto, unici resti di un fiorente centro, è di smarrimento, misto ad un pò di malinconia.

Poi, passano dei bambini, in lontananza. Non so dove vadano nè da dove vengano.

Desert castles: they call them that way, but actually only a few have been castles.
They are mostly hunting pavilions, old villages, small fortress and caravanserais, palaces where caravans used to stop during their long merchant travels.
Today most of them are only a bunch of ruins.

I rent a car in Amman, for visiting some: there’s a big car-renting shops area, that is pretty far from the city center. And Amman is not a hole. Got off the cab, I start to ask in all shops, placed side by side (this is very convenient), for the “cheapest car”. In the end I take a Hyundai in a local agency, for 3 days at a cost of… I don’t remember. :)
My first stop is Umm el-Jimal.

It was a village founded by nabateans, in the first century A.D., according to greek and nabatean inscriptions found on site.

My feeling while walking among thousands of basalt blocks, only remnants of a flourishing center, is lost, mixed with a bit of melancholy.
